Mike Summey is an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. From a humble upbringing in the poverty-stricken coalfields of Southern West Virginia, he struck out to make his fortune at the tender age of 15. With little education and no money, he stumbled his way through several menial jobs ranging from carpenter work to factory jobs and even door-to-door encyclopedia sales. In 1967, at age 21, after being laid off from his factory job and given $300 in severance pay; he paused to contemplate his future. After considerable thought, he wrote down a simple sentence that he carried in his wallet for the next 30 years. The sentence read, “I will become a millionaire by age 30 and retire by age 50.” What followed was like a fairy tale and speaks volumes about the power of having goals.
On the outside, John Parrish is a highly successful doctor, having risen to the top of his field as department head at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Inside, however, he was so tortured by the memories of his tour of duty as a marine battlefield doctor in Vietnam that he was unable to live a normal life. In Autopsy of War, the author delivers an unflinching narrative chronicling his four-decade battle with the unseen enemy in his own mind as he struggled with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Parrish examines his Southern Baptist childhood and the profound influence of his father, a fire and brimstone preacher turned Navy chaplain, while offering a candid assessment of the “God and Country” ethos that leads young men to rush wide-eyed into war. He describes the unimaginable carnage and acts of cruelty he witnessed in Vietnam, experiences that shattered his world view leaving him to retreat from his family upon his return stateside.
This morning I will talk with Rik Deitsch, author of Invisible Killers; The Truth About Environmental Genocide. As a board certified doctor in internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine, he has written about the many toxins that invade our homes and bodies. So begins the exposé that educates readers about the very real dangers that surround us every day in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the foods we eat. These environmental toxins can build up in our bodies, causing disease and even death. www.invisiblekillers.com
