All parents expect change from their teens. Mood swings, erratic behavior and rebellion come with the territory. But how much is normal, and when do you know there is a problem?Northwestern University researchers say they have boiled it down to a blood test. The new diagnostic tool identifies genetic markers that indicate a problem more serious than the usual melodrama. “Simply being a teenager is something of an emotional problem,” says psychologist Gregory L. Jantz, author of “When Your Teenager Becomes … The Stranger in Your House” (www.aplaceofhope.com ). “The transformation from child to adult is akin to a reptile shedding its skin, causing a marked change in appearance and an irritability that can result in snapping and hissing,” he says, “which is not so different from teenagers.”Currently, psychologists determine depression in teens from nine distinct symptoms, Jantz says. Only four or five of those symptoms can lead to a diagnosis of depression.
The Wall Street Journal reported today that “Facebook Inc. is developing technology that would allow children younger than 13 years old to use the social-networking site under parental supervision, a step that could help the company tap a new pool of users for revenue but also inflame privacy concerns.” Gwenn O’Keefe, MD, a pediatrician and author of CyberSafe: Protecting and Empowering Kids in the Digital World of Texting, Gaming, and Social Media thinks this a “horrible idea.” Dr. Gwenn is one of the most highly sought after pediatric and social media experts seen and heard in the media today, with regular appearances in print, online, radio and TV, and in community and national events as an invited speaker. Her mission is to help parents keep their kids safe online. Her book, CyberSafe empowers parents to participate with their digital kids and teens by understanding how and why they use the digital world.
How do you feel about your country’s overall morality? Odds have it you aren’t very optimistic. Sixty-five to 76 percent of Americans think our moral values are either lacking or declining, according to Gallup polls taken in 2011 and 2010. Respondents cite several reasons, chief among them, that parents are not instilling proper values in their children. Steven Hill, a counselor with two master ‘s degrees in psychology, is part of the majority. That’s why he authored “The Adventures of Katie Bubbles” (www.MyKatieBubbles.com ), a book series designed to help children ages 8 to 12 understand and adopt values such as helping others and a solid work ethic.

This afternoon I will be talking to one of my most revered and special guests! He has been my mentor, and Burton Goldberg will be here this hour talking about the latest developments in cancer, that could save your life! If you want to know what’s on the forefront in alternative medicine, ask publisher Burton Goldberg. If you want to know which therapies work best and what’s politically urgent, he’s your man. He’s spent over 30 years carefully researching every aspect of holistic medicine, from California to Israel, Mexico to Russia. But it’s taken only a few years for this self-made businessman to emerge as “The Voice of Alternative Medicine.” What you most need to know about Burton Goldberg is that he has a mission to reform American medicine and to help Americans reclaim their health. He wants people to know that with alternative medicine, every disease is reversible. In trauma and emergency situations, mainstream medicine can work wonders. But in the vast majority of health conditions, alternative medicine has the treatments that can help. These effective alternative treatments are based on clinical studies and verifiable results--results that have been ignored by conventional medicine. But patients are changing this, patients want therapies that work, that give them healing, and that don’t bankrupt them. Visit his website after the show, it offers Alternative Medicine Essays, books, Congressional Testimony, and many helpful videos. www.burtongoldberg.com
