Every day for the next two decades, 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65, retirement age, according to the Pew Research Center. This boom in retirement leaves state and municipal governments – and much of the private sector – stuck between a rock and a hard place, says Dixie Swanson, former TV personality and author of “The Accidental President Trilogy” (www.DixieSwanson.com ). Too many companies and governments just don’t have enough money to sustain retirement and business as usual, she says. “Do they honor financial commitments made to employee pension groups and bankrupt their cities or businesses, or do they short-change the retirement funds?” she asks. “It’s not a pretty choice: Management promised workers two Twinkies at retirement. Do the workers want one Twinkie or none?” It’s easy to be mad about overpaid government workers with extraordinary benefits, Swanson says. It’s easier to sympathize with private-sector workers, whose managers typically overpay themselves, using the company coffers like their own personal piggybank. We’re still suffering the consequences of the magical belief in never-ending economic growth that led to our current recession”.
When Bill W. and Dr. Bob created Alcoholics Anonymous 77 years ago, they borrowed principles learned from a Christian fellowship called the Oxford Group to create their 12-step recovery program. “They knew that their spiritual – not necessarily Christian – program was effective where other ‘cures’ had failed, and over the years, there have been many theories as to why,” says Dr. Harry Haroutunian, physician director of the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, and collaborator with Dr. Louis Teresi on the book, "Hijacking the Brain: How Drug and Alcohol Addiction Hijacks our Brains – The Science Behind Twelve-Step Recovery." “Now we know that stress is the fuel that feeds addiction, and that stress and drug and alcohol use cause neurological and physiological changes,” Haroutunian says. “These changes are primarily in the deep brain reward centers, the limbic brain, responsible for decisions, memory and emotion. These centers are ‘hijacked’ by substances of abuse, so that the addicted wants the booze or drug above anything else. ”
This thing we have going on as stewards of Earth – it’s not working, says D.C. Anderson, a former United Nations energy consultant, green-energy engineer and author of “The Survivor’s Manifesto, A Practical Plan to Put Our Government, Our Economy, and Our Communities on a Path to a Sustainable Future” (www.planetoccupier.com ). Anderson, a world traveler who has seen ancient glaciers reduced to near nonexistence in his lifetime, says the industrialized world is on the precipice of ruin due to its reliance on limited resources and the effects of fossil fuels on the climate. Step No. 1 in averting imminent disaster is for the American people to take back control of their government, Anderson says; get rid of all the outside influences and install a truly independent, fully functional, unencumbered decision-making body. For one,“Two houses of Congress are redundant and one of them should be eliminated,” Anderson says. Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea of two Houses in 1778 out of necessity but we no longer need two Houses of Congress in today’s world. Other musts on his list include replacing the single member executive branch, the president, with a panel of three people, including at least one woman, and having governors of each state nominate candidates for the House of Representatives from a long list of capable people residing in the state.
Road to Valor is the inspiring, against-the-odds story of Gino Bartali, the cyclist who made the greatest comeback in Tour de France history and secretly aided the Italian resistance during World War II. Gino Bartali is best known as an Italian cycling legend: the man who not only won the Tour de France twice, but also holds the record for the longest time span between victories. During the ten years that separated his hard-won triumphs, his actions, both on and off the racecourse, ensured him a permanent place in Italian hearts and minds. In Road to Valor, Aili and Andres McConnon chronicle Bartali’s journey, starting in impoverished rural Tuscany where a scrawny, mischievous boy painstakingly saves his money to buy a bicycle and before long, is racking up wins throughout the country. At the age of 24, he stuns the world by winning the Tour de France and becomes an international sports icon. But Mussolini’s Fascists try to hijack his victory for propaganda purposes, derailing Bartali’s career, and as the Nazis occupy Italy, Bartali undertakes secret and dangerous activities to help those being targeted. He shelters a family of Jews in an apartment he financed with his cycling winnings and is able to smuggle counterfeit identity documents hidden in his bicycle past Fascist and Nazi checkpoints because the soldiers recognize him as a national hero in training.
