Terry Jones founded Travelocity.com and then founded its new competitor Kayak.com. What was the secret to his decades of leadership success? “The leaders at the top need to hear from the people on the line – the clerks, the customer service reps, the people who are actually touching the customers,” says Jones, author of “On Innovation,” (www.jonesoninnovation.com). “They’re almost always the employees with the best ideas for solving problems, streamlining processes, improving the customers’ experience. That’s where innovation begins.” The trouble is, in companies where the leadership has made failure too risky for middle managers, an impenetrable “bozone layer” forms between those at the top and those at the bottom. “The short-term solution is for leaders to find ways to reach through the ‘bozone layer’ and talk to the workers. Solicit their ideas, implement them and give them a really big shout out for their great contribution,” Jones says. The long-term solution is to vaporize by bozone layer by changing the culture. “Encourage experimentation and new ideas. When something doesn’t work, kill the project -- not the person! People need to know it’s safe to experiment and even to fail.”

What if reading certain books actually could make you rich? Thomas Corley, President of the CPA firm Cerefice & Co., who conducted a study of the daily habits of 233 wealthy people and 128 poor people, says self-help books do work. “In my five-year study, I made a profoundly important discovery: 88 percent of the wealthy individuals in my research read self-improvement books and articles, and industry-related books and articles on a daily basis,” says Corley, author of “Rich Habits – The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals,” (www.richhabitsinstitute.com). “Comparatively speaking, only 2 percent of the poor in my study engaged in self-improvement reading. One of the interesting things that I found was that the poor who received periodicals invariably set them aside with the intent of reading them later. Unfortunately, very few actually ever got around to it.” However, contrary to how many think of wealth, living near, at or below the poverty line is not a static position, he says. And, it’s wrong to think that most rich people have inherited their wealth – 85 percent never inherited a dime from their parents, he says. “According to my study, rich people have good daily habits. If you’re poor, getting rid of just two Poverty Habits and replacing them with just two Rich Habits multiplies your chances of becoming wealthy four-fold. In time, this has a noticeable impact on one’s finances,” Corley says. “This should come as very good news to many people, because a simple tweak in one’s daily behavior can mean breaking the generational cycle of poverty and move you into middleclass or into the wealth class.”
