Ellen Rogers considered herself something of a tragedy snob. The single mother of five believed she could weather any storm, that she could keep her family from harm with fortitude and grace. But nothing could have prepared her for the June 2005 car accident that left her son, Ned--then 22 years old--fighting for his life. Ellen refused to give in to despair. We'll get through this, she told herself. We have to. But love and determination can only go so far, and the road home was fraught with obstacles. Ellen and Ned took comfort in family and friends. And they prayed for a miracle. Miracles happen to those who believe, the saying goes, but who would have believed that one family's "miracle" would weigh in at five pounds sopping wet? Then Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled provided Ned with an affectionate and intelligent service animal with a steadfast devotion to hierarchy, a longing for "spa days," and a craving for Gummi Bears. In other words, a diva. Life with Kasey was yet another challenge for this large and lively family, but they persevered as families do, and in time this wise and sensitive animal did more than help Ned cope with his disabilities--she turned the simple tasks of life into a life worth living. Kasey's astonishing intelligence and compassion brought hope and laughter back to a family facing its greatest challenge, and helped them see the world in a new way.
Chloë Atkins holds a PhD in political theory and is currently an associate professor in the Law and Society Program at the University of Calgary. She has received Fulbright, Clarke and Killam fellowships, as well as a fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She is currently at work on two books, one on the difficulty of making ethical decisions in everyday life and the other on trust, human rights and vulnerability. At age twenty-one, Chloë Atkins began suffering from a mysterious illness, the symptoms of which rapidly worsened. Paralyzed for months at a time, she frequently required intubation and life support. She eventually became quadriplegic, dependent both on a wheelchair and on health professionals who refused to believe there was anything physically wrong with her. When test after test returned inconclusive results, Atkins’s doctors pronounced her symptoms psychosomatic. Atkins was told not only that she was going to die, but also that this was her own fault; they concluded she was so emotionally deranged that she was willing her own death. My Imaginary Illness is the compelling story of Atkin’s decades-long battle with a disease deemed imaginary, her frustration with a succession of doctors and diagnoses, her immersion in the world of psychotherapy, and her excruciating physical and emotional journey back to wellness. As both a political theorist and a patient, Atkins provides a narrative critique of contemporary medicine and its problematic handling of uncertainty and of symptoms that are not easily diagnosed or known. She convincingly illustrates that medicine’s belief in evidence-based practice does not mean that individual doctors are capable of objectivity, nor that the presence of biomedical ethics invokes ethical practices in hospitals and clinics.

Dr. Glenda Corwin is a clinical psychologist who has been in private practice for twenty years. She specializes in sexual intimacy issues for women in same-sex relationships. Her work as a therapist and her research on lesbian sexual patterns inspired her to write this book for women who want to feel more joy and intimacy in their relationships. Sexual intimacy is hard to maintain in any long-term relationship, regardless of sexuality—and sustaining a healthy sexual appetite in a relationship over the years takes a great deal of work. Dr. Glenda Corwin knows this fact well—she’s been counseling couples on issues of sexual intimacy for the last twenty years. In her new guide, Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Seal Press, $16.95, June 2010), she addresses the most common concerns in women’s sexual relationships, offering expert advice to help women overcome everything from the effects of aging or past trauma to the disengagement that infidelity and even parenthood can impose on a relationship. Corwin argues that the key to long-lasting sexual intimacy is intention: When women expect passion to ignite spontaneously, they find themselves waiting longer and longer between lovemaking. Sexual Intimacy for Women also addresses a variety of issues women face, from body issues to lowered sex drive, dispelling myths—such as “menopause reduces sex drive”—and offering solutions on how to bring intention back into a relationship. The producer of An Inconvenient Truth, Laurie David's new mission is to help America's overwhelmed families sit down to a Family Dinner, and she provides all the reasons, recipes and fun tools to do so. Laurie David speaks from her own experience confronting the challenges of raising two teenage girls. Today's parents have lots to deal with and technology is making their job harder than ever. Research has proven that everything we worry about as parents--from drugs to alcohol, promiscuity, to obesity, academic achievement and just good old nutrition--can all be improved by the simple act of eating and talking together around the table. Laurie has written a practical, inspirational, fun (and, of course, green) guide to the most important hour in any parent's day. Chock-full chapters include: Over seventy-five kid approved fantastic recipes; tips on teaching green values; conversation starters; games to play to help even the shyest family member become engaged; ways to express gratitude; the family dinner after divorce (hint: keep eating together) and much more. Filled with moving memories and advice from the country's experts and teachers, this book will get everyone away from electronic screens and back to the dinner table.
