His passion for good food is as much a part of Rob Leighton’s genetic code as is high cholesterol. When Rob turned 47, blood tests indicated his cholesterol levels bordered on high. This fact was hardly surprising. His mother’s cholesterol was high enough for her to participate in early clinical trials for cholesterol-lowering medications. Her mother had suffered multiple strokes, and her father died from a circulatory condition. In a brief discussion, Rob’s doctor told him to change his diet to lower his cholesterol, but provided no specific guidance about heart healthy foods to eat. Rob also comes from the food industry. He spent 15 years as a senior executive with a chocolate manufacturer. In founding Kardea Nutrition, Rob combines his love and knowledge of food with a desire to use the best natural solutions to support heart health. Part cookbook, part nutrition handbook, The Kardea Gourmet guides your journey to heart healthy, delicious styles of eating. The Kardea Gourmet is a collaboration of three people: a preventive cardiologist dedicated to keeping people healthy, a gourmet home chef, foodie and former chocolate executive with a cholesterol problem, and a registered dietitian who spends her days coaching people on heart healthy eating and weight loss. As a Frankie Boyer Listener use code Frankie10. It is exclusive to my listeners and provides for a $10 savings on the book (list is $24.95 – after coupon, it would be $14.95) on at www.kardeagourmet.com.
Lots of people WANT to lose weight. And lots of people NEED to lose weight. But how many people know HOW to lose weight? The truth is that losing weight is pretty simple......when you KNOW what to do: Get some EXERCISE. Eat the RIGHT FOODS. Except that most of us DON'T KNOW which are the right foods to eat......and we DON'T KNOW which are the right exercises to do.Oh, and there’s one more crucially important ingredient:Many of us DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN WE FALTER, EITHER......so that when we slip up a bit, WE GO RIGHT BACK TO OUR OLD BAD HABITS. My next guest will be here to help debunk the myth cycle! Sarah Lorge Butler is a Runner’s World contributing editor who has covered the racing, training, and nutrition habits of runners of all abilities, from beginners to Olympians.Shed unwanted pounds and keep them off ONCE AND FOR ALL with Run YourButt Off!, a back-to-basics, test panel–approved weight-loss plan and beginners’ running program that yields sustainable, healthy results. The Run Your Butt Off! program is founded on the simple concept that in order to lose weight, calories burned must exceed calories consumed. No gimmicks, no shortcuts, no silver bullets can circumvent that reality. With this program, you’ll learn to burn fat from both sides of the weight-loss equation—the calories in and the calories out—at the same time. Run Your Butt Off! will make you fitter, stronger , and leaner .
Born and raised in Michigan, Ruta Sepetys is the daughter of a Lithuanian refugee. The nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia disappeared from maps in 1941 and did not reappear until 1990. As this is a story seldom told, Ruta wanted to give a voice to the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives during Stalin's cleansing of the Baltic region. In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina is preparing for art school, first dates, and all that summer has to offer. But one night, the Soviet secret police barge violently into her home, deporting her along with her mother and younger brother. They are being sent to Siberia. Lina's father has been separated from the family and sentenced to death in a prison camp. All is lost. Between Shades of Gray is a long and harrowing journey, and it is only their incredible strength, love, and hope that pull Lina and her family through each day. But will love be enough to keep them alive? www.betweenshadesofgray.com

Harvey Robbins Productions has been kepping the Doo Wopp music alive for years and promote concerts with veteran Doo-Wopp bands all over the country. Harvey Robbins, founder and president of the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America, first discovered a love for doo-wopp music when he was a teenager in the 1950s. Beginning in 2001, the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America holds an annual induction ceremony honoring individuals and groups who have contributed to doo-wopp music. The event is held in Boston’s Symphony Hall. Robbins currently performs with a group called The Royalty of Rock ‘n’ Roll Allstars, who have been together for over 13 years and have shared the stage with doo-wopp legends like Gene Pitt of the Jive Five. Aside from music, Robbins also participates in charity work. He is the leader of the crusade to save Prowse Farm, a piece of land in Massachusetts that holds environmental and historical significance. After the original owner died without specifying who the property would be left to, Robbins and other community activists formed the Friends of Prowse Farm. The group worked to prevent large corporations from developing on the historic site where the Suffolk Resolves, a document whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence was written in 1774. He will be here this afternoon to share the upcoming events in Boston! For a complete listing of events please visit www.harveyrobbins.net
