Tom Davenport, the author of Manager Redefined, and consultant at Towers Watson, a leading management consulting firm, will be here to talk about his book. In this book the author explains that managers must build human capital and engender employee engagement by managing them almost not at all, by attending instead to the factors and circumstances that make them successful. In other words, managers must play their role from offstage and out of the limelight. Based on a survey of over 16,000 employees, the author presents Towers-Watson' management performance model: Executing tasks, Building relationships and performance capability, and Energizing change. Additionally, managers must create an atmosphere of authenticity and trust.
Brianna Karp entered the workforce at age ten, supporting her mother and sister throughout her teen years in Southern California. Although her young life was scarred by violence and abuse, Karp stayed focused on her dream of a steady job and a home of her own. By age twenty-two her dream became reality. Karp loved her job as an executive assistant and signed the lease on a tiny cottage near the beach. And then the Great Recession hit. Karp, like millions of others, lost her job. In the six months between the day she was laid off and the day she was forced out onto the street, Karp scrambled for temp work and filed hundreds of job applications, only to find all doors closed. When she inherited a thirty-foot travel trailer after her father's suicide, Karp parked it in a Walmart parking lot and began to blog about her search for work and a way back. www.girlsguidetohomelessness.com

Dr. Jean E. Keamy’s medical degree was the final chapter in a number of extensive academic achievements. After graduating with a B.A. in Molecular Biology from Princeton University, Dr. Keamy pursued graduate studies at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management and then completed her M.B.A at the New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business Administration. After working several years on Madison Avenue, Dr. Keamy felt that her management job had no impact on helping people.Driven by that desire, Dr. Keamy completed her degree in medicine at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn. Upon completion of her MD degree, she trained as a transitional internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in the heart of New York City.Dr. Keamy then chose to return to her home state and pursue an ophthalmology residency at Tufts University School of Medicine/New England Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Keamy has always had an interest in eye care since her early years in medical school. As a medical student, she traveled on a mission to Honduras to assist ophthalmologists providing eye care to those unable to afford treatment. As a semi-professional photographer, Dr. Keamy has a keen interest in cameras and optics. This interest in vision makes ophthalmology a perfect fit for her. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Keamy pursued a fellowship in refractive surgery at the world famous Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She chose to go there because of Dr. Gimbel’s expertise and the center’s interest in new technologies. She was able to obtain experience in custom ablations and phakic intraocular lenses as well as advanced techniques in LASIK and PRK during her year there. In fact, the center was a referral for many other doctors’ complications, so she was able to gain experience in managing the complications of others. Emergency room physician Vincent D'Amore has found that one of the biggest stressors for parents of sick children during ER visits is their lack of clinical knowledge. Doctors do not expect parents to walk in the door with medical school training. However, it is helpful that they have a core understanding of common disease processes and courses of action. When parents don't know the right questions to ask about their child's care, some physicians tend to practice on autopilot, doing as they were taught, regardless of the current science behind their actions. Common Sense Care is a comprehensive, yet easy-to-follow guidebook that will help parents better understand their ER doctor's clinical decisions. Dr. D'Amore utilizes the most up-to-date science and clinical information to address the most common pediatric complaints and teaches parents what to look for during their child's treatment. As a former grade school teacher, Dr. D'Amore is able to make complicated scientific concepts understandable to laypersons. The information presented in this book will enable parents to better advocate for their children regarding tests and treatments that are often needlessly performed, and ideally will prevent many ER visits in the first place. While written for parents, this guide should be requisite for all health care providers. http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/CommonSenseCare.html
