Litsa Bolontzakis thinks we’re all living disposable lives, and that our children deserve better. Children’s book and cookbook author Litsa Bolontzakis is an expert on Greek cooking and that culture’s easy, simple way of life. Her desire is to help other families learn from her culture how to appreciate the simple things in life and grow to enjoy the seasons and the gifts they bring. According to the Family Online Safety Institute, young people spent an average of 6.5 hours with media on a daily basis – including TV, radio and the Internet – back in 2004. Today, that figure is up to 10.75 hours per day. Moreover, according to Fast Food Stats, more than 50,000,000 people in the U.S. rely on fast food each year. These are stats that worry Bolontzakis, author of the children’s book Summer: The Magic Blanket. Her message to parents is to take whatever time they can to turn off the TV, shut down the computer, leave the cell phones turned off and open their children’s eyes to a world that spun quite well on its axis long before any of those mediums existed – and will continue to spin well after they are all obsolete. Jessie Price grew up in a family full of great cooks and food fanatics. After graduating from Williams College, she cooked in restaurants in California and Colorado, including the Relais and Chateaux Home Ranch near Steamboat Springs. She started out testing and developing recipes for EatingWell and joined the editorial team full-time in 2004 when she moved from San Francisco. Jessie directs the food content for EatingWell Magazine and has worked on several EatingWell books including EatingWell Comfort Foods Made Healthy, EatingWell Healthy in a Hurry, EatingWell Serves Two, EatingWell 500-Calorie Dinners, The EatingWell Diet, EatingWell for a Healthy Heart, EatingWell on a Budget, The Simple Art of EatingWell and EatingWell One-Pot Meals. EatingWell Fast & Flavorful Meatless Meals reports on the latest science, which shows that eliminating meat—even a few times a week—can have a host of health benefits, including improved blood pressure, decreased risk of heart disease, lowered cholesterol, and better weight control. Just replacing meat with starchy refined carbs, cream, and cheese may be “eating vegetarian”—but it’s not eating healthfully. EatingWell shows you how to plan a well-balanced vegetarian diet full of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean sources of protein like tofu, beans, and eggs. Plus you’ll find out why eating less meat is lighter on the environment and your budget. This cookbook solves the problem of how to make a healthy vegetarian meal everyone in the family—from steak-lovers to dieters—will love.
Developing healthier snack alternatives is nothing new for Doug Foreman, whose latest foray into the snack chip market, may be his best yet. In early 2010, Foreman’s Bean Brand Foods launched Beanitos® (www.beanitos.com ), an all natural, bean-based, 100% corn-free snack chip. The overwhelming and enthusiastic response from retailers and consumers has struck a nerve. Supermarket guru and industry luminary, Phil Lempert declared Beanitos, “a hit” and wondered aloud, “Could these be the perfect chip?”Foreman is no newcomer to the specialty snack market. He was very successful in bringing several consumer packaged goods to market, and he is best known for creating the “Guiltless Gourmet” line of low-fat, baked tortilla chips in 1989. He started the line out of his restaurant’s kitchen with only $200, eventually growing “Guiltless” into a half billion dollar category that included the first-ever fat free bean dips and no water added salsas. With the help of the investors behind the successful Barq’s Root Beer brand, Foreman expanded Guiltless Gourmet from its beginning in health-food stores, into the broader mass consumer market in 1992. He ultimately sold Guiltless to Barq’s Root Beer in 1994.In 1996, Foreman also created Pop-Nots™, a snack consisting entirely of the crunchy half-popped popcorn kernels usually found at the bottom of any popcorn bowl. Pop-Nots were sold in Wal-Mart and 7-Eleven Stores and are still available online. Today, his passion for the business is evidenced by his regular visits to Beanitos baking facility, tasting, checking and personally overseeing his latest creation.

Rebecca L. Gladding, M.D. is a Clinical Instructor and Attending Psychiatrist at the UCLA Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. At one point or another, we have secretly had these kinds of thoughts. Plagued with self-doubt and indecision in those moments, we may have responded with anxiety, depression, unhealthy habits like overeating, throwing back a few drinks or repeatedly over-checking something, like our texts or email. For many of us, this becomes an unending cycle in which habits become more engrained and automatic. In You Are Not Your Brain: The 4-Step Solution for Changing Bad Habits, Ending Unhealthy Thinking, and Taking Control of Your Life, Jeffrey Schwartz, M.D. and Rebecca Gladding, M.D., leading UCLA psychiatrists and researchers, combine cutting-edge scientific research with an adaptable 4-step program to help people understand, identify, and free themselves from the deceptive brain messages that hold them back. By learning how to identify deceptive brain messages and channel them through the power of focused attention, those who follow this easy-to-implement program can ultimately lead more fulfilling and empowered lives. http://www.rebeccagladdingmd.com/
