America’s attitude toward race has certainly progressed, as the 2008 election of President Barack Obama helps to illustrate. Do you remember when you first saw--or more likely, didn’t see--the gorilla? For me it was one afternoon a number of years ago when I clicked open one of those noxious-but-irresistible forwarded emails ("You Won’t Believe Your Eyes!"). The task was simple--count the number of passes in a tight cluster of basketball players--but the ensuing result was astonishing: As I dutifully (and correctly) tracked the number of passes made, a guy in a gorilla suit had strolled into the center, beat his chest, and sauntered off. But I never saw the gorilla. And I was hardly alone.The video, which went on to become a global viral sensation, brought "inattentional blindness"--a once comparatively obscure interest of cognitive psychologists--into striking relief. As a puppy she was a winner of life s lottery, when she was selected from the litter of four to come and live with the Van Camp s. Immediately, Allie became a full-fledged member of the family, with all of the rights and privileges afforded any member of our family. Americans love their pets. It wasn t too long ago that pets knew their place begging for scraps from the foot of the table. However, in the last couple of decades Americans have elevated their pet s status to bona fide members of the family with a seat at the table next to the humans. Allie was no exception. She was treated like a queen from the moment we saw her. This story is more than a dog-tale; it is the story of how Allie stole our hearts from puppyhood on. It is said the Bichon Frise is considered a lovable clown whose purpose in life is to entertain their owners. Allie took this role seriously. She provided us with a lifetime of antics and enjoyment. Early on we realized that Allie, though sweet and adorable, was also independent and incorrigible. Dr. Chris Wiant is presently the Chair of the Water Quality and Health Council (WQ&HC) and president and CEO of the Caring for Colorado Foundation. Nationally, he has served on the EPA National Drinking Water Advisory Council, the Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) for development of regulations for disinfection by-products in drinking water (Stage I and II) and he was the chairman of the NSF International Council of Public Health Consultants. Dr. Wiant is also a past president of the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and the Colorado Public Health Association. During summer, 2010, the Water Quality & Health Council mailed over 43,000 free pool test kits to swimmers who requested them on the Healthy Pools website. The kits contained test strips to monitor the pH and chlorine level of pools. Data submitted by swimmers across the country show that more than 40 percent of swimming pools had either unacceptable levels of chlorine or unacceptable pH readings. The data were collected during a summer-long Healthy Pools Campaign sponsored by the Water Quality & Health Council in partnership with the CDC. The campaign encouraged “activist swimmers” to test their pools and promote healthy swimmer behavior such as showering before swimming and not peeing in pools.
