Much of what David Weber learned about how NOT to be a good parent he learned from books and movies, including Harry Potter, which will wrap up its film franchise this summer. Weber, whose books regularly appear on the New York Times best-sellers list, believes that kids and parents are being sent the wrong message by movies and books that depict relationships between parents and their kids to be dysfunctional, and so he’s out to change perceptions. “Books and movies like Harry Potter often frustrate --- and irritate --- me on a very profound level,” said Weber, the father of three children, ages 8 through 10, who recently published his first foray into young adult fiction with A Beautiful Friendship (www.davidweber.net ). “A lot of the kids who read these books and watch these movies are already feeling alienated and frustrated by all the adults around them who ‘just don’t get it.’ It’s wonderful to give them young protagonists they can identify with who are smart, capable, and brave, but do we have to surround them with adults who are all idiots or monsters?”
I will be talking to Dr. Neustadt about your bone health, and calcium. Like most people we think that taking a calcium supplement and a vitamin D daily will be enough to protect us from osteoporosis and fractures. Think again! During this show I will cover with my guest the dangers in inadequate bone health and strength as we age. Dr. John Neustadt’s work. The author of three books, including A Revolution in Health through Nutritional Biochemistry, which was on Amazon.com’s Top 100 list, and more than 100 articles. Dr. Neustadt talks and teaches how people can take charge of their own health and ask the right questions of their doctors for many different diseases, including osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a deadly epidemic affecting more than 35 million people. People with osteoporosis who fracture a hip have a 20% chance of dying within the year, and 20% of those who survive will end up in long-term nursing home care with debilitating pain. Instead of educating patients what they can do proactively to reduce their fracture risk, the medical community unfortunately focuses solely on bone density, which does not predict fracture very well at all. Through dietary and lifestyle changes, fracture risk can be substantially reduced, and natural products such as MK4 have been shown to reduce fractures 87% in clinical trials. Approved as a medicine in Japan since 1995, MK4 with vitamin D and calcium decreases fracture risk better than any of the medications without any of the risks. Actonel, Boniva and Fosamax reduce fractures less than 50% and actually increase people’s fracture risk after five years, and increase their risk of their jaw literally deteriorating after something as simple as a tooth extraction. This condition is known as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). The discovery of MK4 and other natural remedies that safely restore health gives people the ability to take control of their bodies and prevent fractures. Video testimonials for this approach to health can be watched at http://www.nbihealth.com/t-osteoktestimonials.aspx . www.nbihealth.com
Trial Attorney Justin Leto (www.letolawblog.com ) will be here to discuss the trial of a Conrad Murray who is accused of killing Michael Jackson. Justin’s Thoughts:“I see this more of a case of medical malpractice than manslaughter. Sure, Dr. Murray acted with gross negligence when he administered the drugs to Michael Jackson but Mr. Jackson was aware of what was going on and actively participated in the administering of the drugs. This is a criminal trial for one reason and one reason only…because Michael Jackson is the one that died. If we are going to prosecute Dr. Murray for a crime in this case, each and every time a drug addict dies of a heroin overdose or a meth overdose, we should be prosecuting his drug dealer for murder. Should Dr. Murray’s medical license be revoked for what he did? Absolutely. Should he go to prison. Absolutely not!”Story Link: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/09/27/conrad-murray-manslaughter-trial-begins-with-eerie-tapes-michael-jackson-weeks

Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM is a board-certified family practitioner . He is Vice President of Medial Affairs and the Medical Director of Las Vegas Recovery Center (LRVC), the only private freestanding, medically managed inpatient detoxification and addiction treatment facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and co-chaired ASAM’s Third, Fourth, and Fifth National Forums on AIDS and Chemical Dependency. He is the former chairman of ASAM’s AIDS Committee and a member of the Symposium Planning Committee. Dr. Pohl is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at University of Nevada School of Medicine. Recently, Dr. Pohl was asked by the office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) to consult about its initiative on prescription drug abuse. Consider this: the problem of chronic pain is a plague that blights the lives of millions of Americans—in fact, pain is the number-one reason Americans consult their doctors each year. Until now, the number-one solution to this problem has been opioid painkillers—overdoses of which are second only to car accidents as the cause of accidental deaths in this country. Clearly, pain is a problem, but our current “number-one” solution seems to be no solution at all. Pain is a pandemic with no end in sight. But we can do better. A Day without Pain is the title, as well as the goal of this newly revised edition. Enhanced and updated with the latest research, Dr. Pohl’s book focuses on a comprehensive approach to living with chronic pain rather than attempting to obliterate all pain with ever-increasing doses of potentially dangerous and addictive drugs.
