A happier life is available right here and now. Master Coach Ginger Jenks and two Samoyed dogs named Tasja and Magellan show us how in this witty, uplifting and thoughtful book, originally released as “I Bark Because I Do” (Authorhouse). 30 life lessons, such as “Gratitude” and “See the World as a Friendly Place,” come alive in the dogs’ voices as they journey through life and across the US. The stories are complemented by beautiful photographs and illustrations that are eye candy by themselves. A keen observer of human and canine nature, Jenks’ “Thoughtful Paws” for each story will further open your heart and mind. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll be inspired to be the very best person you can be. http://www.waglivelove.com/
In 2002, when the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Rosenwald schools to its list of most endangered historic sites in America, many people were unfamiliar with the story of these iconic structures and no one knew for sure how many were still standing. There had been over five thousand of them when Julius Rosenwald died in 1932, schoolhouses and school-related buildings funded in part through the program that he and Booker T. Washington had created in 1914. In 1954 when the Supreme Court ruled segregation in education unconstitutional the schools, built by African American communities for black children with the aid of funding from Rosenwald, became obsolete. As school districts moved (in some places slowly and in the face of considerable opposition) to consolidate their schools they rarely chose to place integrated classes in formerly black schools. Many Rosenwald schools, once the pride of their communities, vanished – fell apart or were demolished without fanfare or notice.
The Trees is an epic novel told in Godfather fashion about a handful of childhood friends who make it out of the slums of Brooklyn and reunite as young adults during the years of mob-controlled Las Vegas. Lawrence "Mongoose" Cohen starts running numbers for local bosses while in high school, and eventually manages the gambling activities at the Desert Winds Hotel and Casino in Vegas. There he reunites with Eunice--a teenage heartthrob--who's now a showgirl known as "Venus." She initially ignores him but softens after he's almost killed in a car bombing. Haunted by Venus's former involvement with underboss Tommy Di Meglio, Mongoose deals with Tommy, "makes his bones" against his would-be assassin, and becomes a "made man" as Las Vegas transforms into a legitimate entertainment mecca ready to do business with Macao in the new millennium.
As a financial planner, Carl Richards grew frustrated watching people he cared about make the same mistakes over and over with their money. They were letting emotion get in the way of making smart financial decisions. He named this phenomenon—the distance between what we should do and what we actually do— “the behavior gap.” Using simple drawings to explain the gap, he found that once people understood it, they started doing much better.Richards’ work now attracts thousands at BehaviorGap.com and at the Bucks Blog at The New York Times. Now in his first book he’ll help you to:avoid the tendency to buy high and sell low;avoid the pitfalls of generic financial advice;invest all of your assets—time and energy as well as savings—more wisely;quit spending money and time on things that don’t matter. http://www.behaviorgap.com/book/
