I will be interviewing Debbie Greenspan –the stay-at-home mom who was so passionate about making her home healthy for her baby that she invented the first antimicrobial treated doormat for home use. Throughout the 90’s Debbie co-owned a travel marketing firm with her sister. They sold it for over 5 Million dollars to Pegasus. Debbie knew that she wanted to use her share of the money to launch a new business and this time she wanted it to be something she felt passionate about and that reflected her values but she wasn’t sure what that business would be. However, she was about to turn 40, divorced and very eager to start a family so she focused on that for a couple years. She remarried and they adopted a little girl. After becoming a mom in 2002, Debbie, a lifelong allergy and asthma sufferer, felt a bolt of panic when she watched her infant daughter Haley playing on the floor and sticking her fingers in her mouth. While family and friends assured her “A little dirt won’t hurt her,” Debbie, who had studied sanitation and housekeeping while getting a degree in hotel management, wasn’t convinced and decided to investigate. Did you know that breast milk contains substances similar to cannabis? Or that it’s sold on the Internet for 262 times the price of oil? Feted and fetishized, the breast is an evolutionary masterpiece. But in the modern world, the breast is changing. Breasts are getting bigger, arriving earlier, and attracting newfangled chemicals. Increasingly, the odds are stacked against us in the struggle with breast cancer, even among men. What makes breasts so mercurial—and so vulnerable? In this informative and highly entertaining account, intrepid science reporter Florence Williams sets out to uncover the latest scientific findings from the fields of anthropology, biology, and medicine.
Counting the Days is the story of six prisoners of war imprisoned by both sides during the conflict the Japanese called the "Pacific War." As in all wars, the prisoners were civilians as well as military personnel. Two of the prisoners were captured on the second day of the war and spent the entire war in prison camps: Garth Dunn, a young Marine captured on Guam who faced a death rate in a Japanese prison 10 times that in battle; and Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, who suffered the ignominy of being Japanese POW number 1. Simon and Lydia Peters were European expatriates living in the Philippines; the Japanese confiscated their house and belongings, imprisoned them, and eventually released them to a harrowing jungle existence caught between Philippine guerilla raids and Japanese counterattacks.
In Masters of Command, Barry Strauss compares the way the three greatest generals of the ancient world—Alexander, Hannibal, and Caesar—waged war and draws lessons from their experiences that apply on and off the battlefield. Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar—each was a master of war. Each had to look beyond the battlefield to decide whom to fight, when, and why; to know what victory was and when to end the war; to determine how to bring stability to the lands he conquered. Each general had to be a battlefield tactician and more: a statesman, a strategist, a leader. Tactics change, weapons change, but war itself remains much the same throughout the centuries, and a great warrior must know how to define success.

Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) fourth annual Growing Green Awards recognize growers, food producers, businesses and young people who are helping to make our food system healthier and more sustainable. As people across the country learn to reconnect with their food and how it is grown, this demand has brought farmers, businesses, and activists nationwide to increasingly use clean energy sources, reduce pollution, work to restore the soil and land, and protect public health. NRDC’s Growing Green Awards remind us that the food we eat every day, and the way it’s grown, is intimately connected to our health and the health of the environment. A Growing Green Award will be given to an outstanding individual in each of four categories, including Food Producer, Business Leader, Food Justice Leader, and Young Food Leader. On May 16, the Growing Green Award recipients was announced. This year’s Young Leader award was presented to Andrea Northup. Before the age of 25, Andrea founded the D.C. Farm to School Network, an organization behind the movement for healthier school food in 200 public schools and 90 charter schools throughout Washington, DC. Not only is Andrea transforming school lunch menus by charting alliances between DC schools and local food producers, but she’s also influencing policy in the nation’s capital. In 2010, Andrea was the principal architect of the farm to school provisions in the landmark “Healthy Schools Act”, legislation that makes D.C. one of the first jurisdictions in the country to provide financial incentives to schools that serve fresh, locally grown products and infuse food and nutrition education into classrooms. You can find more information about the Growing Green Awards, and the innovative ideas and processes being recognized at www.nrdc.org/growinggreen .
The World Health Organization estimates that lifestyle-oriented diseases will cost the global economy $30 trillion over the next 20 years (that includes smoking and alcohol abuse, as well as chowing down sugary and salt-laden snack foods). What’s going on here—why do we have such a massive health crisis? Don’t our experts have an incredibly deep and nuanced knowledge about how health and the body function? They do, but we could do better by embracing our own operating systems. In other words, a “Force-Quit-Delete” may be in order. In FITNESS FOR GEEKS, Bruce W. Perry discusses: The best times of day to eat and WHAT to eat. Why eating carbs before exercising isn’t healthy. Why you can get a beer belly…even if you don’t drink beer. The best exercise routines to lose weight, and maintain a healthy weight. What two things matter most in keeping a healthy lifestyle. How to find your way around the gym, especially the weight room. The pros and cons of yoga. What apps are the best for exercise, and how to use them. Bruce W. Perry doesn’t flinch from offering technical or scientific information in FITNESS FOR GEEKS; along with a little homespun wisdom, he gives a provocative look at what we can do to step away from our computers and step into a healthier life.
