Just a few years ago, Congressman Ron Paul’s call to return to the gold standard seemed like a fringe Libertarian idea.
Now, it’s a mainstream Republican possibility being kicked around by vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and others. So, is a return to the gold standard -- something not seriously considered in 30 years of Beltway politics -- a realistic possibility? And what would the effects be?
“With our debt continuing to mount – more than $16 trillion at this point – and a do-nothing Congress that has to postpone budget deadlines every chance it gets, we will soon have to do something drastic,” says David Bradshaw, (www.myideafactory.net), monetary expert and publisher of “The Inflation Deception: Six Ways Government Tricks Us and Seven Ways to Stop It!”
The gold standard would inextricably link the dollar to the gold currency available in the United States. President Richard Nixon broke the link in 1971. Ronald Reagan tried to re-establish it in 1981, with no success.
By the end of 2014, some economic strategists see gold’s value increasing by 36 percent, up to $2,400 per ounce. Gold’s value increases as the dollar weakens.
“A return to the gold standard may be inevitable as we try to print our way out of our economic woes,” Bradshaw says. “We can’t keep doing that.”

Did you know that every time your little superheroes and fairy princesses feast on brightly colored Halloween treats, they might be filling up on the products of Chinese petrochemical factories?
“Many parents would be horrified to learn that most of the synthetic food dyes used to make Halloween candies so colorful and appealing to kids are petroleum byproducts imported from China,” said Jane Hersey, National Director of the Feingold Association (
www.ADHDdiet.org ), a charity that helps children with learning and behavior problems.
“Parents have often assumed that the hyperactivity, temper tantrums, and other behavior problems that many children have after eating Halloween candy are caused by sugar, but recent studies have revealed that these behaviors are often triggered by synthetic dyes, flavorings or preservatives in the candy,” said Hersey, whose eldest daughter’s behavior was helped by removing these additives from her diet.
The negative effects of synthetic food dyes on children’s behavior have been known since the 1970’s, when Dr. Ben Feingold discovered this link and developed the low-additive Feingold Diet. Since then, an increasing body of research has established that the synthetic food dyes widely used today are far from harmless and can affect children’s behavior in profound ways.

The fantasy genre has been temporarily hijacked by “chick-lit,” says New York Times best-selling author Larry Correia.
Sexy, sympathetic vampires portrayed in popular media like the “Twilight” series and “True Blood” have ruined monsters for true fantasy fans, says Correia, whose newest book, “Monster Hunter Legion,” (
www.baen.com ), is set for release Sept. 4.
“The only time vampires should sparkle is when they are on fire,” Correia says. “People are sick of half-baked, self-conflicted bad guys. That’s why I set out to write books where the monsters don’t want to date you, they want to eat you, and the best way to deal with them is by shooting them in the face.”
Fantasy stories are meant to entertain wish fulfillment – the psychological satisfaction of a desire, he says.
“In the case of fantasy fiction, wish fulfillment is kicking paranormal butt for fun and profit,” Correia says. “It’s only a matter of time before the cultural shift favors real monsters once again.”

A bestselling author’s groundbreaking eating plan that challenges the notion that starch is unhealthy
From Atkins to Dukan, the fear-mongering about carbs over the past few decades has reached a fever pitch; the mere mention of a starch-heavy food is enough to trigger a cavalcade of shame and longing.
In The Starch Solution, bestselling diet doctor and board-certified internist John A. McDougall, MD, and his kitchen-savvy wife, Mary, turn the notion that starch is bad for you on its head. The Starch Solution is based on a simple swap: fueling your body primarily with carbohydrates rather than proteins and fats. This will help you lose weight and prevent a variety of ills.
Fad diets come and go, but Dr. McDougall has been a proponent of the plant-based diet for decades, and his medical credibility is unassailable. He is one of the mainstay experts cited in the bestselling and now seminal China Study—called the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” by the New York Times. But what The China Study lacks is a plan.
Dr. McDougall grounds The Starch Solution in rigorous scientific fact and research, giving readers easy tools to implement these changes into their lifestyle with a 7-Day Quick Start Plan and 100 delicious recipes. This book includes testimonials from among the hundreds Dr. McDougall has received, including people who have lost more than 125 pounds in mere months as well as patients who have conquered lifethreatening illnesses such as diabetes and cardiac ailments.
