Roddy Dolan, a successful suburban surgeon, long ago left behind his past--one that nearly landed him in jail at 17. When he's approached by an old friend about becoming a silent partner in a Manhattan steakhouse, he's understandably wary. So he consults with his lifelong blood brother, Danny Burns.
Danny's convinced this "vanity project" is the perfect trophy to illustrate how far they've traveled. Certain he's buried his checkered past, Roddy joins in this venture with serious reservations. Danny is quickly sucked into the high-energy glitz of the restaurant, but Roddy is suspicious.
Amidst the glitter of New York's nightlife, amongst Mafia honchos and Russian thugs, events spin out of control and the lives Roddy and Danny knew are over. Hidden shady dealings drag them and their families into life-threatening terrain. Struggling with a monster he thought he'd buried, Roddy must make momentous choices, and none are good. But he has a daring plan . . .

Mark Anthony is no ordinary lawyer. In his distinguished career, the Oxford-educated attorney has tried cases involving rapists, child molesters, and mass murderers. He’s also licensed to appear before the Supreme Court. What separates him from other accomplished professionals in his field, however, is that he is a self-proclaimed psychic who communicates with the dead. It’s easy to imagine how that sits with some of his colleagues.
“If I have a mission in life,” says the author who appears regularly on radio and TV as both a legal and paranormal commentator, “it’s to use my abilities to help heal people suffering from the loss of loved ones.” The first part of Mark’s “Ivy League” tour is scheduled for November 27 through 30, during which time he will be at Harvard Coop and Brown University Bookstore giving readings and signing copies of his new book Never Letting Go. He will be available for media interviews during this time. For more please visit his site

As a dog-loving society, we often tend to attribute human characteristics to man’s best friend. Pets are treated as members of the family. We buy them clothing and jewelry. And when stories of animal abuse arise in the news, we are often just as outraged – sometimes even more outraged– than when we learn of people being abused.
“But dogs are not people – they don’t think like people, they don’t react to certain stimuli like people, they don’t use their senses in the same way as people do,” says Melissa Berryman, a dog behaviorist, author of “People Training for Good Dogs”
www.ptfgd.com , and founder of the nonprofit preventive training organization, Dog Owner Education and Community Safety Council.
“When dogs don’t react the way people would, for instance, if a dog snaps at a child trying to hug it, society says the dog is bad,”Berryman says. “The dog is not bad! It’s simply responding to what it perceives to be dominating behavior.”

The economy has changed, and we may need to look backward in order to move forward, a researcher says.
“We have become so accustomed to the fruits of our forefathers’ labor that many of us have forgotten just how tough they had it,” says Sigrid Wilshinsky, author of “My Life in America Before, During and After the Civil War” (
www.amazon.com ). “But 150 years ago, Americans succeeded by being resilient, resourceful and tenacious about finding work they could do.”
Wilshinsky translated dozens of letters written by Louis Hensel, a mid-1800s German immigrant, to his German granddaughter, Emma. They’re full of lessons for contemporary Americans, immigrant and non-immigrant alike.
“Reading them is like peeking through a rip in the curtain of history and experiencing life during that time,” Wilshinsky says.
Steady work was not a given for an immigrant just off the boat, and there was no Social Security or other safety nets back then, she says. People relied on their friends and their friends’ friends – social networks replicated today online.
