Once upon a time, labor unions worked to ensure their members earned fair wages, had safe working conditions, and were treated fairly when there was a problem. But that was long ago, says former southern Nevada teamster trust R.M. Smith, who worked with the union for 16 years. “Unions have become a big political action committee. Protecting workers is no longer their primary mission and, in fact, they don’t even hold themselves to the same standards that they hold other employers,” says Smith, author of “Union Hypocrisy,” (www.twitter.com/unionhypocrisy ). “People know so little about how union leadership operates now, they get away with denying their own workers the rights they used to protect for all workers.” Labor unions have slowly turned their focus toward promoting themselves as an entity and rewarding a select few at the top, Smith says. A glaring example of this was the Hostess Twinkie debacle, in which stubborn, self-serving unions oversaw the destruction of a classic American snack. “The problem with unions is that they claim to have the interest of workers as their core mission, and because of tradition and their lack of transparency, people believe them,” she says. “Today, workers are much better served by learning and understanding their rights and using that knowledge to protect themselves.” Once devoted to the union cause, is now a labor consultant with the “other team” – corporations.

 

On a frigid New York night last month, a New York police officer walking his beat spotted an elderly homeless man sitting barefoot on a sidewalk near Times Square. The officer stopped to ask the man whether he had anything to keep his feet warm. The elderly man said no. So, the young officer went to a nearby shoe store and bought the man the best waterproof winter boots he could find, along with socks. He returned to the man and knelt beside him to help him put them on. Unbeknownst to Officer Lawrence DePrimo, a visiting tourist snapped a photo and sent it to the NYPD. Inspiration went viral. It’s that simple yet powerful sort of gift 35-year-old Heather Huffman has rediscovered since moving to the Ozark Mountains with her husband and three sons to try their hand at homesteading. “Just smiling at a stranger who looks like they’re not having such a great day and seeing their scowl melt, that’s a really great feeling,” says Huffman (www.heatherhuffman.net ), who – between tending chickens, horses, cows and three rambunctious boys -- writes uplifting mystery-romance novels. Her newest is “Devil in Disguise.”

Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever fleet of 24 Habitat Mobile Response Units is en-route from Atlanta to assist communities in New York and New Jersey recovering from Hurricane Sandy. The special vans are outfitted with tools, equipment and volunteers to help families in need help with critical home repairs. The Habitat Mobile Response Units are an exciting new offering from Habitat for Humanity. With winter upon us and many families in need of help, these response units will facilitate Habitat efforts in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. Habitat’s “Repair. Rebuild. Restore.” effort to assist in the long-term recovery of communities affected by Hurricane Sandy is already underway and will provide families in need with critical home repairs, rehabilitations /reconstruction, weatherization and new construction. Upon its arrival, the Habitat fleet will be deployed to Monmouth County, N.J., joining three local Habitat affiliates to help repair homes. The fleet also will be sent to New York’s Breezy Point community, where Habitat for Humanity is carrying out extensive clean-up and repair efforts. Kip Scheidler, Sr. Director of Habitat for Humanity International’s Disaster Response, is available for interviews next Tuesday, to discuss and how you can help this unique caravan and response team of volunteers.
