Crisis comes in many forms. It can be a job loss, divorce, bankruptcy or illness. Or it can be more subtle, says Denise Barreto, who says she found her best opportunity to contribute to the world while in the midst of professional and personal turmoil in mid-2008.
“A clear-cut crisis actually allowed me to see that I wasn’t working to my full potential; you can be comfortable with a job and afforded a good lifestyle, but if you don’t identify with an essential part of your life, like a job, then there’s something tragic about your life,” says Barreto, author of “From Here to There: 5 Steps to Doing Your Life’s Work Every Day,” (
www.relationshipsmatternow.com ).
She finally asked herself, “How can I make money doing my life’s work?” For her, the answer was: facilitating business relationships among others.
“My message is not the typical ‘follow your passion’ deal – passion doesn’t pay the bills,” she says. “But we tend to like what we’re good at, and if you’re honest with yourself after answering a series of questions I lay out, then you are on the right path to realizing your potential.”
Whether you’re in desperate need of direction without a career opportunity, or life is “just okay” with a decent job that pays the bills, the New Year is a perfect reminder to look at where you’d like to be in life, and to plan how you might get there, she says.

Zarbee’s was developed by one of the country’s top pediatricians, Zak Zarbock, M.D.
In 2008, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) found it unsafe for parents to give any of the current children’s cough syrups to kids under the age of four. This left parents struggling with what to give their coughing child.
As a pediatrician and father himself, Dr. Zarbock was frustrated that he was not able to offer any relief to his young patients with coughs and sore throats. He set out to create a safe and effective natural remedy that he could feel good about recommending to parents. His research led to the discovery of a compelling clinical trial showing dark honeys were more effective at calming coughs and sore throats in children and young adults than any other drug-based cough syrup. After extensive research, Zarbee’s Cough Syrup was born: the first natural, safe and effective cough syrup for children 12 months and older.

Vicky Oliver (
http://www.vickyoliver.com/ ) is the author of five bestselling books on personal branding, etiquette, and career development, including her latest, The Millionaire's Handbook: How to Look and Act Like a Millionaire Even If You're Not(Skyhorse, 2011). She's a leading career adviser and image consultant in Manhattan. We all know that money is power. The wealthiest few get invited to glitzier parties, live in swankier homes, obtain more lucrative deals, and attract rosier prospects than the rest of us. But why should life’s best perks accrue only to those able to afford them? In a world where social standing is determined primarily by perception, The Millionaire’s Handbook will show you what it takes to mingle with millionaires and party with plutocrats.
Vicky Oliver will give you the brazen confidence that you need to dress the part on a pauper’s allowance, nosh on the right finger sandwiches without splattering any cucumber juice, hobnob with the world’s most influential people, and navigate your way through their cloistered bubble with aplomb.

The tragic events in Newtown, CT have people around the country asking hard to answer questions. Parents ask, how can I help my children process what just happened? How can I give them skills to be safe, happy, and productive members of society? We all ask, how can we prevent such a horrific event from happening again?
There is work being done around the country that helps answer these difficult questions. Lesson One, an evidence-based mental health practice, teaches skills such as empathy, self-control, connectedness, self-confidence, respect for diversity and stress reduction for home, school and the community. Children talk about how they use these skills in and out of school. The skills help children make sense of and process these types of events. Children can talk about how the person with the gun did not feel confident, have self-control or feel a connection to those around him. When children internalize these skills, research shows that children are more likely to be healthy, successful and law-abiding adults. Teaching young children these skills is an integral part of an overall approach to prevention of future violent acts.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without--our grandmothers knew the importance of responsible, thrifty choices. But somewhere along the way we lost our way and succumbed to the belief that we can get everything for next to nothing, have it shipped halfway around the world and then, more often than not, just throw it away.
This consumer binge is taking its toll. Diet and lifestyle-related illnesses are epidemic, our environment is awash in a sea of plastic, our climate is changing, and the cost of everything is skyrocketing with the price of oil. Are we doomed? No. We can make greener, healthier choices, and we can do it while saving money.
Where to start? Ecothrifty is packed with simple, practical ideas and recipes to help you:
• Make homemade products for cleaning and skin care
• Grow your own food and cook more from scratch
• Raise your family without lowering your standards
