Written by gifted storyteller Winston Groom (author of Forrest Gump), The Aviators tells the saga of three extraordinary aviators--Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle--and how they redefine heroism through their genius, daring, and uncommon courage. This is the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival-at-sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, and Flyboys. With the world in peril in World War II, each man set aside great success and comfort to return to the skies for his most daring mission yet. Doolittle, a brilliant aviation innovator, would lead the daring Tokyo Raid to retaliate for Pearl Harbor; Lindbergh, hero of the first solo flight across the Atlantic, would fly combat missions in the South Pacific; and Rickenbacker, World War I flying ace, would bravely hold his crew together while facing near-starvation and circling sharks after his plane went down in a remote part of the Pacific. Groom's rich narrative tells their intertwined stories--from broken homes to Medals of Honor (all three would receive it); barnstorming to the greatest raid of World War II; front-page triumph to anguished tragedy; and near-death to ultimate survival--as all took to the sky, time and again, to become exemplars of the spirit of the "greatest generation."
Bestselling novelist Richard Paul Evans has met hundreds of thousands of people and heard many of their stories in his travels over the past two decades. Most of the people he meets are hungry for inspiration; they love his novels because his characters are also searching for meaning and understanding. The Four Doors is Evans’s message to those who seek inspiration in their lives. It began as a talk he gave on the spur of the moment, and over the course of ten years, it has evolved into a message he has shared with successful business people, students, and even addicts and prisoners. It includes stories his readers have told him, stories about great achievers who overcame hardships, and stories about his own struggle growing up in a large family with financial difficulties and a suicidal mother, and about his diagnosis of Tourette’s Syndrome later in life. These inspiring stories are woven through his identification and careful explanation of the four doors to a more fulfilling life: BELIEVE THERE’ S A REASON YOU WERE BORN FREE YOURSELF FROM LIMITATION MAGNIF Y YOUR LIFE DEVELOP A LOVE-CENTERED MAP Evans believes that we all want to know the meaning of our lives. In The Four Doors, he shows how even the most quiet life can be full of purpose and joy, if we choose to take that first step over the threshold.
Just about every American today can remember Sept. 11, 2001 – where they were, how they felt and what they did for the rest of the day. For Eddie Gindi, who has worked near the towers since 1979 as co-owner of Century 21 department stores, 9/11 was especially traumatizing, demanding a much longer recovery process. “For a long time, I was not able to talk about it or let any emotions out,” says Gindi, vocalist for the band Men in My Head (www.meninmyhead.com), which has jumped from unknown band to No. 1 on the best-selling CDs charts with the single Gindi penned, “Survivor Tree.” “Then, last year, we got a tour of the 9/11 memorial and I saw the survivor tree. I was deeply moved by its story: Soon after the attack, members of the parks department found this burnt stump of a tree buried in ash and rubble at Ground Zero. It had been broken and smashed, but it was still alive.” The tree was taken to a Bronx park, where it was nursed back to health, and then replanted at the 9/11 Memorial. Today, it’s flourishing, Gindi says. The song it inspired has catapulted Men in My Head to the top of the charts, where it has remained for 18 weeks and counting, besting Adele, One Direction and other much better know singers and groups. “It’s been amazing – to have something so personal and painful become such a blessing,” Gindi says. “I’m at a loss; I’m humbles, and it’s great!”
