Irv Slifkin, our movie expert, will be here talking about what is new in the movies of 2014! Ξ Hard-won insights on transitioning into adulthood Author, speaker, and autism advocate Jesse A. Saperstein knows a lot about living with Asperger’s. Diagnosed at the age of 14, Jesse has struggled, triumphed, flubbed, soared, educated, and inspired. Along the road to adulthood, he has learned many lessons the hard way. In this honest and engaging book, Getting a Life With Asperger’s, he offers a guided tour of what he’s learned about getting along with others, managing emotions, succeeding in school and work, building relationships, and more. Ξ In OFF THE LEASH, longtime Boston Globe TV critic Matthew Gilbert takes a delightful look at the dog park subculture, and, in particular, the strange, wonderful, neurotic, and eccentric dog park people who gather at Amory Park, overlooking Boston. He chronicles his own transformation, after much fear and loathing of dogs and social groups, into one of those dog people with fur on their jackets, squeaky toys in their hands, and biscuits in their pockets. Gilbert describes his reluctant trip into the dog park subculture, as the first-time owner of a stubbornly social Yellow Lab puppy named Toby. Like many Americans, he was happily accustomed to the safe distance of TV viewing and cell-phone web surfing, tethered to the digital leash. But the headstrong, play-obsessed Toby pulls him to Amory, and Amory becomes an exhilarating dose of presence for him. www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/names/2014/08/21/matthew-gilbert-book-optioned-nbc-burn-later-gets-toronto-premiere/coiikCjzG4TFNwtdMXYsEO/story.html Ξ On July 8th, 1860, three buildings caught fire and citizens watched as Dallas, TX burned. Three slaves were accused of arson and hanged without a trial. Afterwards most historians say the fire was probably an accident, but that only highlighted the dangers that slaves faced in antebellum (pre-Civil War) TX. Henry Chapell paints a vivid picture of the time and the events that led up to this tragedy in his new critically acclaimed book, SILENT WE STOOD (Texas University Press). Chapell tells the story of a small group of abolitionists working tirelessly to combat the violence that slaves were victim to, and shows what it took to help them escape. Many historians have believed that pre-Civil War Texas was too remote and steeped in Confederate culture for substantial Underground Railroad activity. But Chapell weaves together historical evidence to suggest that subtle rebellion by abolitionists might have played a more important role than scholars have realized.www.ByHenryChapell.com
