Polls have shown that 90 percent of U.S. residents believe donating organs is a good thing, but those positive thoughts don’t always result in positive actions. Just 48 percent of the adult population has registered to donate their organs, according to Donate Life America, a not-for-profit alliance of national organizations. Meanwhile, across the United States a staggering 123,000 people are on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant, the American Transplant Foundation reports. They and their families anxiously wonder whether an organ will come available before it’s too late. Tedi Tuttle Wixom knows what that’s like. More than two decades ago the life of her 9-month-old son, Jason, depended on finding a new heart to replace one that didn’t pump properly. Luckily for Wixom and her son, a new organ was found quickly. But when it comes to transplants, what is a miracle for one family often is a tragedy for another.Tedi Tuttle Wixom, the mother of nine children, was raised in Idaho, but now lives in Utah. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Brigham Young University and is the author of A Whisper of Spring Time: Jason’s Heart Transplant Miracle Ξ Despite the endless stream of bad news we read or see in the news every day, some of the world’s leading scholars, such as Steven Pinker, make the case that citizens – especially those living in First World countries – are currently enjoying the most peaceful time in human history. “Indeed, we ought to appreciate the level of security and social progress we have here in 2015 – without a doubt, but part of respecting the gains we’ve made on these fronts means remaining vigilant on a number of issues,” says Robert Buettner, an acclaimed sci-fi writer, former U.S. Army intelligence officer, scientist and attorney www.robertbuettner.com. His latest novel is “Balance Point.” Ξ A standard blood test indicates how well the kidneys and liver are functioning, the potential for heart disease, and a host of other vital health markers. Unfortunately, most of us cannot decipher these results ourselves, nor can we even formulate the right questions to ask about them—or we couldn’t until now. In Your Blood Never Lies, best-selling author James LaValle clears up the mystery surrounding blood test results. In simple language, he explains all of the information found on these forms, making it understandable and accessible. This means that you can look at the results yourself and know the significance of each marker.James B. LaValle, RPh, CCN, ND, has been involved in natural medicine for over twenty years. Known as “America’s Pharmacist,” he is a nationally recognized figure in the field of natural therapeutics. Dr. LaValle’s experience ranges from extensive clinical practice, product design and formulation, and technology development, to author, educator, and media personality. jimlavalle.com Ξ According to research conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that one out of six boys and one out of four girls are sexually abused before they turn 18. The trauma often stays with them long term, possibly for their whole lives. How can we help them not just “get on with their lives,” but actually heal from the abuse? Dr. Beth Haggett, a faculty member at Saybrook University’s School of Mind-Body Medicine, has a new answer: using the mind/body connection to address the way trauma stays locked in the nervous system and coded into heart and brain functions. www.saybrook.edu
