Can you imagine looking for news about the Gen. Petraeus resignation on television and learning only one point of view because others had been driven off the air by the administration and the FCC under a control of news doctrine? Censorship like this happened before in the United States, although the public was generally unaware, and it could happen again, says former NBC-TV legal counsel Corydon B. Dunham, author of “Government Control of News: A Constitutional Challenge,” Dunham’s book, which began as a Smithsonian Institute Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, chronicles the federal government’s 38-year censorship of broadcast news under the Fairness Doctrine. This government rule was revoked in 1987 after the FCC and courts found it deterred news reporting on controversial issues, chilled speech, and was used to suppress viewpoints and criticism of the president. But thenin 2008, the FCC released a proposed new set of rules: the Localism, Balance and Diversity Doctrine. “They will have the same practical effect and worse, because the FCC would add official local boards to monitor and edit the news and recommend ending broadcast licenses,” Dunham warns. This could even affect news on the internet in the future.
